17-10-2008 - Buraka Som Sistema: Best Portuguese Band, MTV Europe Awards

This is exciting news. I'm mad about this band and kuduro, the infectious music they make. I first heard about them in a NY Times piece which ran October 3. The review of the Lisbon/Angola group was enough to send me racing to MySpace (every band I've ever sought is there) and they more than lived up to the review. The video for "Sound of Kuduro", shot in Angola, had me on my feet, dancing like a wild woman, trying to capture some of the impossible moves. Believe me, I was sore the next day. I'll let the video do the explaining.

The sound has been described as world dance music with beats and bass, but it's more than that. BSS describes their sound as Breakbeat / Club / Ghettotech. I feel kuduro is the next big thing in music and now that the group has won the best Portuguese band they're in the running for Europe's Favorite Act, the winner of which will be announced at the MTV Europe Awards in Liverpool, November 6. Voting is open and I want to see BSS be among the top 4 and then win this award. It all depends on how many online votes they receive as all but the top 4 will be eliminated. Vote HERE and as many times as possible -- there's no limit.

Be sure and buy their new album, "Black Diamond" and a remix of "Sound of Kuduro" or if in the UK, check MySpace for tour dates, which run from October 21 to December 12. They've just come off a U.S. tour and I'm bummed I missed them.
