26-7-2005 - Hating Jack Thompson Since Before It Was Cool

I wish I could take credit for that line. It goes to Solid Snake from Free Forum World, where the entire forum is called, "Gamers Against Jack Forum Index", with 6 separate Jack topics, ranging from "Jack Thrompson Social", "Plot your Attack", "News", "Mess Hall", "Mail Box" and "Jack in the Box". I discovered it after seeing many hits coming from there. Link.

I have been losing it for many days when viewing search terms on Google and Yahoo. "Jack Thompson idiot", "crazy Jack Thompson", and "Jack Thompson menace" are just a few. This isn't the only forum taking this nutcase on. According to el stats again, Neoseeker and is taking him on with guns blazing, but the wildest I've found is Slashdot.

I can't recall anyone as despised as this flotsam except George Bush. Thompson's ego and sense of "righteousness" may cushion the blows a bit for him, but I think if he read the diatribes and jokes against and about him, he may threaten to sue. He's been so puffed up after hooking up with Hillary and appearing on a few network news shows, he's become most pathetic. She is a disgrace, using the video game war to further her political aims. President? My ass! I'd switch parties if I were a Democrat and she was the choice.

In case there are some who don't know who this piece of shit is, he's a Miami lawyer who has taken on video games in the past, claiming they caused his clients to kill and do other perverse things. His latest escapades include GTA:San Andreas and the Hot Coffee mod which turns some of the chicks into prostitutes and Sims 2, which he likens to a pedophile training camp because people can add nudity to the characters.

There's more material in the forums than I can use, but you can bet I'll use the choice ones. The original poster on Slashdot had me laughing with this:

Blood-sucking remora like Thompson are the biggest dangers to further acceptance of gaming as a healthy passtime. He is taking the specific case of GTA and the ESRB ruling and broadening it out such that a 3rd party mod is affecting perceptions of an excellent game title. I have no doubt in my mind, either, that his righteous fury is entirely motivated by a desire for personal profit and prestige. He is using the prevailing winds of U.S. society to increase his place in the public eye, at the expense of gaming as a hobby and game-making as a profession.

My hope is that the mainstream media, when they pick up this story, will be able to see beyond the smokescreen Thompson has created to the real issues at hand.

That's my hope, too. The mainstream media is painting him as a stand-up guy -- a real video game expert. Haha. Jack is just wack, period. Here's another comment::

Rumour has it that, with the right modifications, Jack Thompson can be naked. A penis and exposed ass are both visible when this mod is applied, and the makers of Jack Thompson released him to the world in full knowledge that he can be naked.

Moving on now to KeepYourKillingClean and the article, "Jack Thompson Is A Douche Bag", written in February after "suing Sony, Take Two (publisher of Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto Vice City), Gamestop and Walmart for $300 million. He's saying they all played a roll in training Devin Thompson to go on a carjacking kill spree in June of 2003. Devin Thomposon is accused of killing 3 cops." Eyes roll and roll again.

Some of the comments are choice! Like this one:

Jack Thompson is a very disturbed individual who should seek professional help. Instead, he uses his position to attempt to bring down the first amendment and cost industries millions of dollars each year.

I have no doubt in my mind that someone who is equally as disturbed who is an extremist for freedom of speach will one day shoot him dead. And I for one will not be shedding a tear.

Ohman, this next one is too much and it's an apparently automated reply to yet another gamer who tried to write him and get for once a decent reply. It's long, but worth it.

Dear Senator Clinton and Senator Lieberman:

I have had a number of video gamers threaten to kill me in the last few days in the aftermath of the success against Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. This is noteworthy in a number of regards:

1. The people threatening to kill me so are doing so in the name of the First Amendment and "freedom of expression" - not mine, of course, just theirs. Don't you love it?

2. The use of death threats in retaliation for my participation in the public square serves to prove, rather convincingly, that the violent video games are having the attitudinal effect that psychologists such as Dr. David Walsh and others who have testified before Congress say they have.

3. None of the "video game media" will report that the gamers are threatening to kill me, although I have asked them to report this phenomenon, as it reveals the validity of the above two points.

I would appreciate any help your respective offices could give me in persuading the FBI to act in response to these threats. I don't think anyone should have to put up with such dangerous nonsense.

Yep, nuttier than... betcha thought I was going to say a fruitcake. Nope, acorn tree. I just discovered there's a StopJackThompson site, containing links to articles about him, but best of all a petition. Link. I think I was wrong to say he vied with George Bush as the most despised man in America. I'm beginning to think he's worse.

MacAddict took him on, too, republishing the letter he sent to ESA (Entertainment Software Association) and prefaced it with this:

As reported by Kotaku, industry watchdog/opportunist/cornhole Jack Thompson wrote the Entertainment Software Association an open letter calling for the ousting of ESA president Doug Lowenstein.

The letter is hilarious, and drips with hyperbole and ego masturbation. I know it's a long read, but it's important to see how the gaming industry looks to stupid people.

My personal highlight? The paragraph where he projects Bush's "parents just have to be better parents" comment onto the victim's parents, and not the perpetrator's. Just... wow. Link.

This really should be read and it's too long to paste in this already lengthy diatribe against maddog Thompson. Someone asked seriously if it was satire. That's how ridiculous it is. He likens ESA president Doug Lowenstein to Hitler. It's true. Read it. Read all the comments -- they're worth it.

Now to return to the forum designed solely to rag on Jack. It's amazingly funny and also provides links to other tales of this cretin. One of the best is to Ferrago who list a slew of Jack Thompson tirades. Link. The thing gamers rag on him the most for are email exchanges. I've been there. In one, which I lost because I let my Hotmail account lapse, he actually told me of some of the things he's going to do. In the other I was a gamer, not a worried parent and he wrote this back: "actually, you don't know me, have never met me as you claim, so you don't know what the Hell I am or what you're talking about. nice try, idiot." That's tame. He's called some people Saddam.
