11-9-2006 - George Tabb Was Right: Officials Finally Acknowledge 9/11 Health Problems

I wrote about Tabb's ongoing health problems after being a resident and part of the clean-up crew at Ground Zero on June 27, 2006. He wasn't happy about asking for help, but he'd run out of options as officials denied anything was wrong. People all over the world responded to his cry for help by either donating money or putting on benefit concerts and writing about it. George never stopped in his pursuit for answers.

He was relentlessly calling the mayors office in June, he tried contacting Hilary Clinton with no luck, but he did play a part in getting the officials to do an about face and now claim there are serious health problems for those who were part of the aftermath and cleanup. The current focus is on firefighters and other emergency workers, with a minor focus on the joe citizen helpers. This has all but ruined Tabb's life -- he's a brilliant writer and his band Furious George kicks ass. Will he be able to return to his former life?? Will he ever be onstage again singing "Hello From the Gutters of New York City"?. Will his next book be funny or about the tragedy his life has become?

I was both stunned and jumping with joy when I discovered that just last night on CBS's 60 Minutes, Katie Couric reported on "The Dust At Ground Zero" and "how if affected Ground Zero First Responders". Wow, this is quite a read. The only thing missing from this is George Tabb who was the subject of a People Magazine article and was on TV about it long before it became the major issue it has become. It was Tabb and people like him who kept the pressure on to get the health care they need -- it was more than that. They wanted the US government to stop lying and admit it was a horrendous problem. They went after EPA's Christine Todd Whitman who declared September 18, 2001, before tests were finished, the air was safe. What a back pedaling bitch. She kept going on that responders were told to wear respirators, yet many say they "couldn't get them at first" plus "And when they did, they were cumbersome and often clogged, making them useless."

Dr. David Prezant, the Chief Medical Officer for New York City's Fire Department, who was also engulfed in the cloud answered, when asked why the dust was so toxic:
The biggest problem was that it was pulverized building materials that wind up having a very high alkalinity — almost like lye, all right, or Drano — that when you inhale it or swallow it, it's burning your entire nose and airway and stomach.
Tabb has had several stomach surgeries and breathing problems as well as past mental problems all due to being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He's a hero who's had to suffer for 5 long years.

This article in Health News Digest sums things up well:
Today marks the fifth anniversary of 9/11, a tragedy that is finally also being recognized for its continuing health effects. Beyond the immediate casualties that occurred on that fateful day, there is no more denying that the ensuing debris, smoke, chemicals, and fires were more than a mere nuisance, or a temporary inconvenience—whether for surviving civilians or rescue personnel. Indeed, despite the Environmental Protection Agency's shocking nonchalance over the whole matter, its initial nothing-to-see-here-move-along posture, there is, sad to say, a real problem concerning fallout from this unprecedented event.
Here's hoping the new focus will actually do some good and people like George Tabb will receive the care they need as well as monetary compensation. For the punks reading visit his sites if you haven't already. Help George Tabb where one can view a video of him on Fox TV claiming it will cause a cancer cluster and who knows what else which aired 2002. Also read his blog for more insight; George Tabb, his homepage; Furious George, where "Hello From the Gutters of New York City" can be downloaded.

A must watch is a YouTube, "Jenna Orkin of the WTC Env. Org.: air poisoning at ground zero." If this doesn't wake everyone up, nothing will.

I just got off the phone with mayors office, and I'm making waves. So maybe that's a good selling point?
